We had a productive time at the clinic today. Maggie had all standard blood work and her counts are solid. Her liver function panel is normal. Because Dr. Collier is still on vacation – we’ll see him next Monday prior to our chemo admission for a complete report on the latest CT scan, tumor board discussion, etc – we asked to discuss our concerns for appetite and pain management with one of the other oncologists. Maggie has been having discomfort/pain in her chest. The doctor ordered a chest X-ray which did show some fluid around the lungs. She was not overly concerned with the amount – it will be monitored. The present discomfort is a possible combination of some tumor progression in the lungs AND a sign chemo is starting to work by aggravating the tumors (way to go, chemo!). We had a most productive discussion of pain control options and possible appetite stimulants. Maggie has started using a patch for a constant source of relief without the negative effects encountered via oral meds. It seems to be working already. We’re going to watch her appetite to see if it bounces back on its own with the relief of discomfort. We are encouraged to know we have options if it does not return to a normal level. With normal liver function restored, we are hopeful we’ll see it improve.
We appreciate being back at the CCC/Batson more than I can say. On days like today, I’m reminded of a conversation with a visiting pediatric oncology fellow last year during a chemo admission. She had previously studied at Johns Hopkins and other comprehensive cancer settings. She shared in her experience the clinical work – caring for the whole patient – done at Batson’s Children’s Cancer Center is second to none. We agree and thank the Lord for placing them so close to home. I’ll just say, for now, He is at work in the lives of His servants in a place of incredible suffering to bring about unexplainable and incomprehensible joy.
We have the a full week to rest and catch up on home projects before returning to the clinic next Monday for chemo round #2. We’re praying for complete pain control, rest, appetite, and no complications to spoil the week. We hope you all have a safe and happy 4th. Thank you for prayers!!
