From Batson:

Yesterday (Tuesday) evening, Maggie started spiking a higher fever (she seems to have a low grade most of the time) of 102. We decided at 10:30 last night to make the trip to the UMMC ER. Her heart rate was 160. IV fluids helped to bring that down fairly quickly. Many tests later (chest X-ray, flu swab, blood counts and cultures, urine, EKG), we believe she has a UTI. She was admitted to 3C at Batson to continue fluids and IV antibiotics. Her blood counts are still solid, so she should be able to clear the infection quickly. She is feeling better and resting. We’ll be staying at least tonight.

The UMMC adult ER is nothing if not interesting. Last night fireworks accidents were outpacing gun shot wounds easily. Despite the busy night, Maggie was taken to an observation room immediately and received quick attention. It was a long night – we made it to the floor in Batson at 5:00 am and finally settled down to sleep as the sun started rising. Maggie commented several weeks ago that she had never really watched a sunrise – other than the early morning drives to Jackson to report for surgeries. I told her we would have to choose a spot with a glorious view to enjoy daybreak. The third floor of the children’s hospital is not the place we had in mind. And we didn’t watch it this morning- we were exhausted. But I can’t help but give thanks for the simple beauty out the window for it means one thing. The gift of another day. It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23.
